as the nerve center of the organizational unit.

Management is needed in all types of organized activities and so are managers.
Moreover, management principles are applicable to all types of organizations, including profit-seeking organizations may it be industrial firms, banks, insurance companies, small business, etc.and as well for the not-for-profit organizations governmental organizations, health care organizations. educations organizations, churches, etc.

Any group of two or more people working to achieve a goal and having resources at its disposal is engaged in management.

Obviously, a manager's job is somewhat different in different types of organizations, exists in unique environments, and uses different technology.

However, the key roles of the manager all organizations need the common basic activities: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

Being in a managerial role usually requires prompt decision making. Decision making process is the process by which managers respond to opportunities, threats, analyze all the available options and make a sound decision which is commensurate with the goals of the organization.

The decision taken helps decide the further course of action. Decision making is one of the core responsibilities of a manager’s job. There are other responsibilities as well which usually involve problem solving and work distribution. A manager must make informed decisions based on his expertise, technical knowledge and experience.

Managers use a wide range of decision strategies, often changing these strategies from one situation to the next. The strategies lead to a wide variety of choices of varying quality, depending on the decision being made. Managers are equipped with a number of useful techniques for diagnosing problems, clarifying values and goals, structuring and modeling decisions, and gathering useful information.

a. Interpersonal roles

grow directly out of the authority of a manger’s position and involve developing and maintaining positive relationships with significant others.

1) The figurehead performs symbolic legal or social duties.

2) The Leader builds relationships with employees and communicates with, motivates, and coaches them.

3) The liaison maintains a network of contacts outside the work unit to obtain information.

BLOGGED BY MINU ANN managers have a diverse and varied job, and promotion should just be one element of the scope.

A manager understands and conveys to his people the meaning of a system. He explains the aims of the system. He teaches his people to understand how the work of the group supports these aims.

He helps his people to see themselves as components in a system, to work in cooperation with preceding stages and with following stages toward optimization of the efforts of all stages toward achievement of the aim
A manager of people understands that people are different from each other. He tries to create for everybody interest and challenge, and joy in work. He tries to optimize the family background, education, skills, hopes, and abilities of everyone. This is not ranking people. It is, instead, recognition of differences between people, and an attempt to put everybody in position for development.

BLOGGED BY ANU

A manager is coach and counsel, not a judge.

He understands a stable system. He understands the interaction between people and the circumstances that they work in. He understands that the performance of anyone that can learn a skill will come to a stable state — upon which further lessons will not bring improvement of performance. A manager of people knows that in this stable state it is distracting to tell the worker about a mistake.

He has three sources of power:

1. Authority of office
2. Knowledge
3. Personality and persuasive power; tact
